Starting Life Together – Rock Solid!
Every youth pastors’ dream is for the youth in their ministry to not only know Christ, but to keep following Him through college and adulthood. They want their youth to be rock-solid Christians. Unfortunately, statistics show that this is the minority of kids in youth programs today.
Recently, I was at the wedding of Omar and Jasmine where nearly 300 people were in attendance. I’ve known them since they started coming to the Cityteam Youth Outreach program from our San Jose Mayfair location 13 years ago. From our Mayfair center, Cityteam has engaged the community with compassion outreach, youth programs and Discovery Bible Groups. Mayfair has been cited to be one of the worst neighborhoods in Santa Clara County.
It was such a joy to see my Cityteam teammate, Ricardo Pineda, officiate the ceremony. Ricardo was their youth leader and become their mentor, pastor and friend over the years. The youths from that group formed a tight spiritual community that placed Christ first, loved each other like they love themselves, and also helped others to do the same; causing a ripple effect of disciple-making that spread to other cities in California, Mexico and Honduras. In fact, some of these kids discipled their parents to Christ.
In a neighborhood where people are often thought of as stuck, they have raised the bar. They all still love and follow Christ. They all still love and serve each other and are part of the team to see the Great Commission fulfilled in the Bay Area and beyond. They continue to be part of the Mayfair community and Discovery Bible Studies. It is such a blessing to know these Rock-Solid Christians and see them take the next step in their lives!
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-27
DMM is not the only way to make disciples, but it’s the best way I have seen and experienced to multiply disciples and bring transformation to individuals, families and communities in a scalable and sustainable manner.
